Water and agriculture are in tension because food production consumes 70 percent of the available potable water. Exacerbating this problem is the fact that 25 percent of the world’s agriculture is grown in areas of high water stress. This figure doubles when looking at irrigated cropland.
We need to resolve this tension soon because the stress is getting worse with population growth and limited water resources. Water demand in many parts of the world is already exceeding natural supply. Aquaponics can help resolve this issue because it uses a mere 5% of the water required by soil based agriculture.
